hi,

i want to build a home server. i will use it as personal application server and media server.
i have ASROCK 970 extreme4, should i use 8120 as home server and buy 8350 for main pc or i buy Athlon II X2 270?
if i choose 8120, i will disable 2 or 4 cores for some reason. and i will use 8350 at least 3 years until ddr4 price fits my budget.

thank you

AMD x1xx (example: 8120) CPUs have the bulldozer architecture and are pretty awful. If you're going to get AMD, at least get a Vishera (x3xx) CPU.

What do you plan to do with your home server? The FX 6300 might do the trick. In fact, the 6300 would offer comparable performance to an 8130, especially if you plan on disabling some cores already. Then you could get an i5-3350P for your main PC.

This would get you the same brute processing power for your home server, and very fast processing for your main PC. Coincidentally, it would be roughly the same price, and you would get a net gain in performance.

the home server will handle personal financial application server, puzzle database, file storage and media server.
i upgraded from 970 extreme4 to CHF V-Z last year. because my extreme4 max stable oc is 3,8+ ghz. what are the difference between 65w TDP and 95w TDP exlude performance, say maybe electric bill or room temp?
