Bought a new computer and didn't realize the manufacturer had partitioned the drive, windows & Dell software was pre-installed on C. The system is, by default, downloading to C. I didn't realize this until AFTER I installed several software packages. Is there a way to MOVE those from C to D w/o having to uninstall and reinstall? Or, is there a way to resize the two partitions so I can leave things as they are, and simply install all software going forward on D? I'm new at this so this is probably a rookie mistake that there is a simple solution for...alas, I do not know what it is... :-(

What is partition "D"? Do you have another hard drive installed, or was that there when you got the computer?

There is only one hard drive, it came with two partitions: c & d. Windows 8.1 is so different from Win 7 that it took me awhile to realize that and notice that my software installations were defaulting to C, leaving over 2TB's of partition d with nothing installed. I'm guessing the c partition was intended to hold only the Windows 8.1 & Dell software. I'm running smoothly but think it would be best if all my software was moved to the super-large d partition.

Hello... it is common for DELLS to partition the Drive, it is the Recovery data you need to make physical backup Disks for your System, First of all, did you follow the procedure to make your Recovery Disks?
After that, you must always choose Custom/advanced/expert install choice, to direct all new software installs to your D: drive.
Some software will be able to run just by copying/moving the C:\ directory and files to D:\ directory and creating a new shortcut for it from the D:\ directory.
Some software will not, and must be un-installed and re-installed to the D:\ Directory...

You can't move programs around. During installation, lots of entries are made in the registry that reference the location of the program files, and files are installed in directories other than the program directory. The only way to move the programs is to uninstall them, and then reinstall them, being careful to install to the "D" partition.

Some manufacturers use a small C partition for OS and D for everything else (dont know why stupid approach), if nothing is on the D drive, delete it and expand the C drive to reclaim that space.

Just got this two days ago and am still struggling with finding things in Win 8.1. I have not made backup/recovery disks but will tonight. I will try your suggestion of copying/moving from C:\ to D:\ tonight. Thank you for the suggestion; certainly worth a try!

Unfortunately for me, I agree with your response re: moving programs. Can't I resize the two partitions and leave the installed program where they are, and then moving forward install to D:\ ? Does Win 8.1 have a tool to resize the partitions?

Hello... locate the Disk management section... BUT!!! Any PATH to fix what is not broken... can only lead your current data to DOOM!!!!
But yes , 1) you could make your backups, 2) delete the Partiiton, 3) and try to have C: adopt/consume it/resize it.
