Hey everyone! I've decided I want to build myself a desktop for the first time and I want to double check with you good folks about what you would change about my build!

Approximate Purchase Date: This month

Budget Range: 700$ TOPS

System Usage from Most to Least Important: School work, surfing the web, gaming, and some audio engineering

Additional Comments: The quieter the better. The first upgrade I will make is to a SSD, I'm hoping the prices drop a bit first but I am having trouble justifiying throwing even more into the original lump sum! I'm hoping to play games like Skyrim on high with decent FPS and next gen games on mediumish with decent FPS.

How does that look? I'm thinking about including a CPU cooler, would that be necessary with this case? What would you guys change without jumping the price up to much? Thanks guys!

You want a better GPU and a better motherboard. Get a 970 chipset motherboard and something like an r9 720x or gtx760.

Change the HDD as well because that is a server drive. Change to a WD caviar blue.

if gaming isnt too important to you, you can save $100 on a gtx 750Ti. this build will run most games at max settings at 720p or very high 1080.

DO NOT use that motherboard. It is known for catching fire as it has POOR power phases and no VRM heatsinks.

Also with a build of this level, get a better quality PSU. Something 550w from XFX would only cost $10 more and be WAY better.

Thanks a lot for double checking that hard drive. I was wondering why it was so cheap, I thought it was just on sale or something! I don't think I can justify throwing an extra 70-80$ on a GPU to be honest. I feel like the performance I get on a 750Ti will be plenty to run Skyrim or GTA 4 (which are this gens most intense games I will play) on high settings and next gens games on medium settings with ok framerates. Am I wrong? I don't need to max out these games at 50 fps.

Also, what is wrong with the 970 chipset? Will it bottleneck my system now or in the future?

Ehh. I would say it will run skyrim at high but not max and next gen games would only run at medium but they will be playable.

Your motherboard uses a 760g chipset which was released 5+ years ago. The board will work, but you will not doing any overclocking or anything like that.

Thanks a lot for your input, I really appreciate it! To be honest, the only games I've played on my laptop (a 2010 Macbook Pro 2.66gHz GeForce 320m) in the last 4 years are Star Wars KOTOR and an attempt to play Skyrim on low settings, which failed. Every other game I've played has been on Xbox 360. So I know that any system I get now will basically be a HUGE step up from what I'm used to. So I think if I can play games for the next 1-2 years on medium I will be happy and at that time I'll be ok upgrading my video card and spending some more moolah!

Probably the biggest thing I want in a Mobo right now is that it will be somewhat future proof. Before I picked that last motherboard, I wanted to go with this one:
MSI 970A
which says it's AM3+ and compatible with an AMD FX6300 on pcpartpicker but on newegg it says it's only compatible with phenom II/Athlon II/Sempron series. Is this just an oversight by Newegg or am I missing something? If this motherboard is compatible, do you think it would work for me?

Ah I should have double checked, you already warned against this motherboard earlier in the thread.

As an alternative to asking if this could play games in 2 years on medium, how about if I said I'd be willing to put about $150-200 into the system per year: would that be enough to keep up with modern games on med-high settings for the next couple of years? I am definitely willing to put in some money every year to stay up to date, it is more difficult for me to put extra money in as a lump sum up front.

I'll look for a different motherboard tomorrow and double check on here again before I decide on one.
