I've recently taken over as IT admin for this office. We have one XP machine that just recently started having connection issues.

The odd thing is the computer can connect to the server and some of the machines on the network, but none of the machines can connect to it. When I try to ping its IP from another machine the request immediately times out, or says the destination host is unreachable, but if I ping the server from the victim machine it works fine.

I ran an antimalware program which picked up a couple of files which I promptly removed but the connection issue remains.

The computer has a static IP address.

I've tried disabling and re-enabling the network adapter, and also tried updating the driver to the latest version. Nothing so far has helped.

Any ideas?

Update: Fixed the ping issue by enabling "allow incoming echo request" in ICMP Settings. The slow network connection issue hasn't been fixed.

I tried changing to a dynamic IP but that didn't help. I tried keeping a static IP but changing it to a different one and that didn't help either.

I opened task manager and checked the performance tab while trying to load a web page. CPU stays under 5% utilization until about half way through loading the web page where it jumps to about 50% and stays there for a minute or two, then drops back down to about 1% usage. The web page never completely loads.

It sounds like a DNS issue. Are the other machines static also or are they DHCP? Are they all using the same DNS server?

Just so I am clear. The windows XP machine can see the network and connect to at least some of the machines. At the same time, the other computers on the network cannot connect to the XP machine. Correct?

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache set to 1
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size set to 3.
Restart and check it. Report back the results.

The other machines do have static IPs and all on the same DNS.

Ok, tried that but it doesn't appear to have solved the issue.

First, make sure your PC is discoverable on the network. In Windows XP, make sure that Files and Printer sharing is enabled.

You also need to make sure your NetBIOS name is reachable by the DNS server and thus to other PCs.

On a related note, as an "IT Admin", you should really be preparing to replace that XP machine and other XP machines that are left in the office. XP's End-of-Life is officially April 8, but you can replace them before then. If Dell can sell you a PC for $330, then that should be in your immediate "To-Do" list.

Ugh I'm so embarrassed. Once the firewall was turned off the network connection worked perfectly fine.

Now I have to figure out what setting on the firewall was preventing it from connecting.

And yes, I'm well aware that XP is support ends next month. Luckily we only have a couple of XP machines left.

Thanks all.

Sorry, I didn't mention what I thought you had already checked - the built-in firewall. Glad to see you got it sorted out!
