The PC in question is 64 bit capable and has 8 GB of ram. I want to know if I can re-use the Windows 7 product key on this PC to re-install Windows 7 in 64 bit. The PC is an ASUS (factory-built) and came with Windows Vista, but later it received a free update to Windows 7.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick replies. Since the HDD is nearly empty I am going to try doing this later this week. I will post my results in case anyone runs into the same problem later.

The install went well, but I being new to re-using the product key mistook the product ID in the system properties panel for the product activation key. The sticker on the computer was for a previous OS (Vista) that was upgraded to windows 7 home premium and then upgraded to windows 7 using windows anytime upgrade. The win7 home premium key was unable to be located, and the windows anytime upgrade to windows 7 ultimate gives you a key that will ONLY allow you to upgrade your OS from home premium to ultimate. The product activation key that came with the windows anytime upgrade can NOT be used for a clean install of the OS. Now I have no choice, but to use the windows 8 key I was hoping not to touch with a ten foot pole...

I hope others find this thread useful in the future.

Since this was my first, but not last, post here. I am off to find out how to close this thread.

Hence, why Microsoft & Windows sucks. You PAID for these upgrades that you cannot use. Getting the real disc with its own key (even OEM disc) is best.
