Moving my HDD to a new PC...

Good evening everyone,

I have a few questions regarding moving an HDD from my current computer to a completely new one. Essentially I want to use it as a secondary storage unit for my new build (which has a 500Gb SDD). The HDD has Windows 8 installed, the SDD has Windows 8.1.

I'd like the SDD to become the primary drive for my activities (which will require me to move the data from the HDD to the SDD).

So, my question is: Can I expect any difficulties? I could upgrade the HDD to Windows 8.1 prior to installing in the new PC? Surely, if both have the same OS, it shouldn't be a problem, right?

In any case, my end-state is I want most of - if not all - my old data on the SDD, with the HDD ready as the secondary drive.

Please, beyond my question, are there any alternative methods I should be aware of (and starting to research)? I've researched quite a bit and have mostly found information regarding moving a drive with an older OS (XP/Vista/7) to a newer build with a newer OS. I'm not sure if most of the concerns apply in my case.

OK, you have an SSD with Win 8.1
You have an HDD with Win 8.

Correct?

You do not need or want both in the same PC, unless you want to dual boot. And there is pretty much no need to dual boot between 8 and 8.1.

And for all new hardware, you really want to install fresh. Yes, you can probably clone from one to another. But IME there is a greater chance of that going wrong over just a fresh install.

And you really don't want to just connect the drive (either one) with the new hardware and hope it works. It might, or it might not. And even if it 'works', it may only work partially.

Next, we have to look at what you mean by 'my data'. Your files....doc, xls, pictures, etc....no problem.
Your applications? Need to be reinstalled again.
