I am soon building my first computer and the case I have chosen has 2 installed fans on it and I am purchasing another 2 fans also. I want to know where each of these plug into (motherboard or PSU). I heard that the two pre-installed fans go into the PSU, as these have switches that allow you to change the speed on them etc, and then the 2 I'm purchasing separately go into the motherboard where from there, I can use a software to control the fan speed etc. is this correct?

If the case fans you ordered are PWM, you can control the speed using the BIOS or a program like Speed Fan. PWM fans have 4 wires, one black, one red, one yellow, one blue. If they are not PWM you will need a fan controller with a resistor to lower the voltage, thereby slowing them.

My motherboard is the MSI G45 Z87 and my PSU is the Corsair 750M. Where do the fans go please? Will I be able to control the pre installed ones by the switches on the Fractual Design Define R4 by plugging them into the PSU, and then the ones I buy separate I will be able to control IF the mobo supports it. If not, they will just stay on, correct?

You had a system fan header (for case fans) by the CPU socket, one by the ATX power socket, one by the CPU fan header, and one by the very last PCIE socket. That is where the fans you purchase go.

That is correct.

Ah ok so the already installed fans plug into the PSU and then the ones I purchase separately go into the system fan slots on the motherboard?
