Hello all,

My rig is as follows:

q9550 @3.8 ghz
6 gb ddr2 800@900 mhz ram
2gb gtx 660 zotac (normal version)

I tried Battlefield 4 beta before. It was unbearingly stuttering so i didn't buy the game in case i couldn't play well enough.

Though i've heard mantle arrived for amd gpus, i have no more budget so the only thing i can change at the moment is gpu. I could find a R9 270 and sell my gtx 660 without spending much money. Will mantle boost my performance with reasonable amount on Battlefield?

In other words, can i avoid bottleneck or insufficiency of my processor if i buy a R9 270 and put mantle on use? (if its possible at all, because i couldn't find much without 'X' tag)

Or should i continue with gtx 660 and buy the game see what happens?

Thanks for any advice!

(at this moment i only am asking for Battlefield 4)

Solution
The driver hasn't been released yet to fix issues with Mantle and BF4. As a result, the majority of AMD GPU owners aren't running the Mantle implementation of BF4. I wouldn't count on AMD at all when it comes to drivers. In theory, Mantle is a great idea. In practice, AMD isn't the best company when it comes to releasing reliable drivers. And, even if they did get everything worked out on the AMD side, I suspect the ball would land in DICE's court with regard to fixing issues on their end (and so on and so on). Also, anything less than an R9 290 do not have have the microstutter/frame time variance issues fixed at a hardware level. Software implementations are going to be less efficient.

My advice... Make sure you're running the...

My advice... Make sure you're running the latest Nvidia drivers and stick with the 660. The drivers have come a long way since BF4 beta with regard to BF4 performance. Also, BF4 has come a long way with patches and fixes (DICE still has a ways to go, though). Both will make a substantial difference.

Also, if I were you, the first thing I'd do when I could upgrade my system is get a new motherboard and CPU as the older architecture may be an additional reason for your lower-than-expected performance.

Thank you sir, i think what you are saying is true.. I will stick with 660 then, and see what happens with my current rig.

I am planning to upgrade other parts this summer maybe i get better performance overall later on. Hopefully i can play on high settings without much problem on multiplayer for now.

Good idea. Save your cash to upgrade that architecture. If I were going to get an affordable and great system for gaming (similar to today's version of your Q9550), it would include an i5-4670K CPU and an Asus Z87-A motherboard. Also, if you live by a Microcenter, the CPU cost is substantially lower than on-line.

I am definitely plannning to go for i5 4670K, plus 16gb ddr3 1600 mhz ram and 4gb gtx 780. I took note on your motherboard advice. Will seek for it when time comes.

Well time passes very quickly i remember the day i built my rig. At 2008 bought a sistem with a q9550 and hd 4830 plus 4gb ram. Looked like a beast.. Today, processor still works good though, if i were able to get it 4 ghz it'd be much greater. Only games i'm having issues is Crysis 3 and BF4 beta so far. But from what i hear from you, the performance on Battlefield 4 might be better as much time passed after initial release, worth trying.

Thank you again :)
