Hi all, I've been having trouble with my PC for the last month or so, been having major FPS problems and CPU usage is 100% while running games. Is this just a case of getting a new CPU, or is the problem lying deeper?

If it would help, I can post my DXDiag information. Any help is most appreciated!

Ok, a few questions first.

1. What games are you playing?
2. What are the specs of your computer (CPU, GPU, RAM, etc.)?
3. Has the problem occurred recently or has it always been that way?

List your specs. Then we can help further. If your cpu usage is at 100% in games then yes you are cpu bottlenecked.

It has never happened up until about a month ago. I didn't download any suspicious programs. It's just started lagging. I mainly play WoW, LoL, D3. LoL is unbearable, as is D3, I can still play WoW though, with lowest settings.

Those games rely on a lot of CPU power, so you are being held back by your cpu for sure. Are you running any other programs in the background? Fraps recording, torrent programs, etc...?

I close everything in the background to try and free up CPU to speed it up, it doesn't work in the slightest though. So, it's just a case of a new CPU?

You shouldn't have any problems playing those games on that spec. If anything, the graphics card is slightly lacking, but nowhere to the point where is game is unplayable. As these games all share a common factor in requiring an Internet connection, how is your connection performing? You may want to go to www.speedtest.net and check your download and upload speeds.

My suspicion is that your Internet connection is sub-par or there's a malicious background process running.

My internet has been on the same plan for the past 3 years and these games were fine to play during that time, I just done a SpeedTest and my Down speed is 13Mb/s and my up is 1Mb/s. That's high end for the internet around my area. If I do have a malicious process, how would I go about getting rid of it?

Those speeds, as you say, are absolutely fine. The easiest way to check for malicious programs is to simply run an anti-virus scan. If you don't have anti-virus, first of all you're making a big mistake, and secondly, download a free one from Avast! or AVG. You can look at the hidden "temp" folder within your local profile but this can be a long and tedious process, particularly if you can't tell the good from the bad.

Sounds like your CPU is hitting it's thermal limit and is throttling the clockspeed. You can monitor the clockspeed in CPU-Z and temps with HWMonitor while playing a game. The same thing happened to my friend with an i5-750. He upgraded the HSF and fixed the issue.
