DVI doesn't transmit sound. You have to use an HDMI cable (that has an HDMI connector on both ends) to get sound.

HDMI carries audio, DVI does not. In fact, that is the biggest difference between the two. Some newer graphics cards can output audio through DVI if you use a DVI => HDMI converter, but that is not guaranteed to work. I guess your card doesn't do that.

EDIT: After digging around, it seems Nvidia 200 and up or AMD 3000 and up can do that with certain models. It works by sending audio through unused DVI pins (analog, probably), combined with a specific adapter that comes with the card. That adapter will route the audio channels into the proper HDMI pins. It only seems to do stereo, though.

Your best solution would be to use a second cable for audio.
