Here are my specs:

1 Dell E6500 Core Duo w/ 6 GB RAM

1 Dell E Series Dock

1 23" Lenovo Monitor model LT2252p (connected by DVI-D cable)

1 24" Dell Monitor model E2414HR (connected by D-Port to DVI-D cable)

I have 3 HDD's:

1. 1 TB WD HDD w/ Linux Elementary OS x64- No Distortions in OS as long as I do not run a Windows VM.

  • Windows 7 VM - Distortions appear in Guest OS as well as Host OS as soon as I boot it up.
Window 8 VM - Distortions appear in Guest OS as well as Host OS as soon as I boot it up.

2. 250 GB Hitachi HDD w/ Windows 7 SP1 x64 OS (separate drive) - Distortions appear about 30 seconds after boot up. Distortions will disappear from most text and pics if I hover over, select, or refresh the active screen however there are some instances that the distortion never clears.

3. 320 GB Toshiba HDD w/ Windows 8.1 x64 OS (separate drive) - Distortions appear about 30 seconds after boot up. Distortions will disappear from most text and pics if I hover over, select, or refresh the active screen however there are some instances that the distortion never clears. Sometimes there a a few distortions, and sometimes it's half the screen.

All distortions happen whether the laptop is docked or not. I have tested by plugging one monitor in at a time as well as no monitor, only the laptop display. I have uninstalled and re-installed all applicable drivers. Up until a few weeks ago, I had no issues. If I didn't need the windows machines for my Graphic Design business I would just forgo them completely, but I need them to run Photoshop and Illustrator. I have worked in IT for a long time, but this one has me stumped!

So how does that explain not having the distortions while running Linux unless I boot up a Windows VM? I have completed an advanced Dell diagnostic with no error output.

Found it was a failing GPU. While running in Linux the GPU is not stressed so bad that it causes distortions, but Windows or Linux running a Windows VM caused the GPU to stress so bad that it caused the distortions.
