All versions of PCI-E x16 are backwards compatible. The devices simply operate at the specification supported by either the card or the slot, whichever is lowest. For example, you can install version 3.x cards in version 2.x and 1.x slots, and vice versa. So you won't have any problem in performance and compatibility. You can decide any card according to your budget and cpu your motherboard is using.
