Netgear DGN1000 Network Extension

I have a netgear dgn1000 router still in a box that I had sitting in the closet. The reviews on it aren't very good but I'm wondering if this thing is totally useless. I have a standard g router (I think it's 54 Mb/s wireless) and I'm wondering if I could put this thing somewhere else in my house for better coverage. Would this router improve anything, speed or coverage? I have a relatively big house and my existing router works decently well but I recently put together a home media server and I could use some more speed/range/etc. Should I add this router to my home network to supplement my coverage or should I replace my g router with this one (even though it doesn't look as reliable based on reviews) or should I just buy some new equipment altogether?

I would buy a new router. They aren't that expensive, and one of the improvements you will get when upgrading to wireless N is better range, as well as more speed. I have a TP-Link WDR4300 that has worked great for over a year now. You can buy it for about $45 on Newegg.

I think you're talking about using it either as a Bridge (for Ethernet usage) or a hotspot extension (for wireless range expansion). Either one would require the model's firmware to have the option of doing so, this article might help you
