NZXT Kraken G10 GPU Bracket with corsair H40 on a gtx 780

I'm considering switching from the stock cooler on my 780 to the "NZXT Kraken G10 GPU Bracket" in combination with an corsair H40 kit.

Should I expect 20 deg C lower temperatures?

Or will the new setup be a bad choice?

Also, will I require a backplate to reinforce the card?

Time to chime in...

First off, the Kraken G10 is fantastic. I have it installed on my Sapphire 290X together with a ThermalTake Water 3.0 Performer which is 120mm and comes with 2 fans. Under full gaming load I have gone from 94 degrees stock to 68 degrees with a 10% overclock, winning! I did put VRM heatsinks on and they get rather high around 87 degrees, but I did use the crap glue that came with it, so maybe that's the issue.

For a GTX 780, it runs much cooler but I think the H40 may be a bit too low end? And the H40 is not on the compatibility list:
NZXT : Kraken X60, Kraken X40
Corsair : H105, H110, H90, H75, H55 , H50
Antec : KUHLER H2O 920V4, KUHLER H2O 620V4, KUHLER H2O 920, KUHLER H2O 620
Thermaltake : Water 3.0 Extreme...
You should not need a backplate the fan isn't terribly heavy.
20 may be too much to ask but 10 or so sounds reasonably though you should probably look at a bigger AIO cooler(h60).
if you do that you may wish to get some heatsinks for the Vram though

I only have room for a 120x120mm fan/radiator. The review you linked to was very helpful, but they say "The 80mm fan on the Kraken G10 is able to keep the VRM and other chips on the card cool enough while gaming", but not when mining or performing other extreme tasks like Furmark. If it can keep the vram adequately cooled in Unigine Heaven, shouldn't it be more than enough for gaming?

Zalman : LQ-320, LQ-315, LQ-310

Do your research on those and choose the best option for your budget. I wanted the best 120mm option so I went with the TT Water 3.0 Performer based on reviews. I actually bought a Corsair H90 140mm but it didn't fit within reach of the card, so that's now my CPU cooler :p Oh and a backplate is not needed at all

I mailed NZXT service and they said "Yes, it looks to be an Asetek made AIO unit and they will fit the G10 brackets." when I asked about the H40. But you are right, it is a bit low end. The H75 with dual fans seems like a better choice :)

Edit: The ThermalTake Water 3.0 Performer seems like the better choice.

Yes it should work fine for gaming just figured it would be best to know that it could possibly be a problem. if it turns out to be a problem on your card its pretty easy and cheap to fix with something like this.

Also, what can I use to check VRM temps?

Most people use GPU-Z, it's a free program that provides excellent info about video cards.
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

See how your temps go and only consider VRM heatsinks if the temps get up to 100 degrees. Apparently they are stated to be safe at 105 but that's dam hot...

GPU Z doesn't list a second gpu temperature, I'm guessing that means that my card doesn't have the necessary temp sensor.

No most cards don't have VRM temp probes. If you want lowes and the like have $20 infrared thermometers that'll give you a pretty good idea of the temps.

It might have the sensor. I didn't see mine at first. Most people say "just scroll down and the VRM temps are there" but... If you have windows set to 125% or 150% fonts size, it won't show. Set it back to normal 100% and then scroll the GPU-Z window down and it's there.

I see. There is a few things missing from there that AMD users get. I've never used GPU-Z monitoring with an Nvidia card, so I can't help on that topic. I would be hitting google to see if there is any alternatives.
