my frend was going to throw out a dell inspiron 6400 laptop because he lost the harddrive(dontask) so i said ide take it and i had a spare hardrive laying arond. so i poped it in and installed windows xp but the laptop is ment for vista so nothing works. built in wifi bluetooth and the modem. and when i try to put windows 8 on it it says i need xp service pack 3. and i cant get internet to updte that. i tryed the ethernet port but that doesent work eather. i was looking for some drivers for xp.

Have you checked Dell's website? That laptop was actually available with either Windows XP or Vista, so drivers should be available for both on their website. Since both Wi-Fi and Ethernet are unavailable, you will probably need to use either a USB flash drive or a CD/DVD-R to copy the drivers over. Service packs can be downloaded and copied the same way, just download the versions labeled "Standalone Install" or "For IT Professionals."

Dell's website may not have the most up-to-date drivers available, but it should work well enough to get you going.
