Does my hardware support this resolution?

I'm confused about what resolutions my monitor/video card can support. There's an old game I play that runs on 1280 x 1024. I have a Monoprice 27" 2560 x 1440 monitor and an HD 5770 Card. The Radeon says it can run up to 2560 x 1600. Does that mean it runs everything below as well? My monitor just says 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz (WQXGA).

I'm running a resolution of 1800 x 1440 on the old game. I did this because it's the same ratio as 1280 x 1024. My main desktop runs as 2560 x 1440. Everything seems to run fine. The 1800 x 1440 just gives me black bars to the right and left.

My question is, am I damaging anything by running this unusual resolution?

Well, the 1800 x1440 DOES have black areas to the left and right. This is required as I'm doing a squarer dimension on a rectangular screen, but that's okay because that's what I wanted/expected.

So there is no issue with dimensions not being supported? Maybe this was only a problem with older CRT monitors where forcing an unsupported resolution on the screen could damage it?
