PC shorts out with CPU cable plugged in

Before I start, I'm new here so do forgive me if I make stupid mistakes with posts :p also, here are my current specs so you guys know what's going on:
Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M LX V2
CPU: AMD FX-4100 Bulldozer Quad Core 3.6GHz
PSU: Corsair Builder Series CXM 600W
GPU: Asus Geforce GTX 760 (I do realise my CPU is probably bottlenecking my GPU like hell right now)
RAM: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB DDR3
HDD: Not actually sure about this, some 500GB, I've had it a while but I doubt it makes any difference to my problem.

Anyway, I recently bought a new CPU, Motherboard and case, and they arrived 2 days ago, which are:
CPU: AMD FX 6350 Hexa Core 3.9GHz
Motherboard: M5A97 EVO R2.0
Case: Zalman Z11 Plus

Now my problem is basically what the topic says. If I have my CPU power cabled plugged into my Motherboard, my PC will start up, with all the fans and LEDs, however some of the Motherboard lights flash around a bit, as if it's trying to make something start and then just dies. But if I simply take out the cable, my PC starts up perfectly fine, with all the Motherboard lights working fine, no flashing, they simply just light up and stay like that, though I think I need to double check which ones exactly are lighting up but everything seems ok to me.

Here's a list of the things I've already tried doing to solve the problem:
Starting my PC with the bare minimum for it to power up (Motherboard and PSU), still does the same things, shorts out with cable in, works with cable out.
Removing all cables from the back of my PC (Headset, USB Hub etc)
Reseating everything, including every single cable
I tried using both my old and new processor, same things happen
I tried separating the 8pin connector (into 2 4 pins) and tried them both separately, same thing happens
Reseating my RAM into different slots
Checked out all the stand-offs to make sure they're all in correctly.

And here's everything I think I should try next:
Reseat CMOS Battery (even though it's a new mobo so this shouldn't be a problem, right?)
Re-install all the components again from scratch (I was too lazy and irritated to bother the same day since I'd spent ages trying to make it work)
Check the bottom of the Motherboard for any damage
Double check the flashing lights on the Motherboard (this is called POST I think?)
Building my PC without a case (though I don't really have anywhere to do that, my room is tiny)

It really does confuse me as to why that one cable causes it to short out. I've rebuilt my old PC, with all the old components and case, and everything works fine so I doubt any of my components are faulty.

Is it possible something is incompatible? I did my research beforehand and everything seems fine. I cannot test my new processor in my old PC because it's incompatible with the BIOS version in my old Motherboard, and I've always had doubts trying to update, especially since I have to do it the traditional way with this Motherboard but I don't think it matters right now since the new Motherboard and stuff won't start up with either of the processors. Maybe I just got unlucky and the Motherboard I was sent is faulty?

I've completely ran out of ideas so I've come to here and plan to post on other forums too to find as many answers as possible, PLEASE HELP ME :(

Yeah I tried the old CPU with the new motherboard, I did mention that. And I don't really want to try flashing my BIOS since I just dont wanna take the risk since I have no idea what I'm doing, plus it's not gonna make much of a difference to my problem, since the CPU's aren't even in question right now, my PC shorts out even with just the motherboard and PSU.

Thanks for the replies, I'll check the actual socket in the motherboard and see if there's something stuck inside or whatever. I don't think the actual cable itself is at fault, since I'm using it right now with my old motherboard, and it's definitely not my CPU fan cable, it's a big 8 pin cable coming straight from the PSU. I shall try changing the CPU fan (even though I mentioned the problem persists with ONLY the motherboard and PSU, that means literally only those, so I don't see how my CPU fan is gonna make a difference)

I fixed it! The problem was really basic... The motherboard simply wasn't mounted on the standoffs properly, meaning it was touching the case and shorting out but thanks a lot for all the replies :)

Yeah I know, I guess I didn't check properly -_- oh well, I learnt some new things by having this problem, so it's not all bad eh? :D
Thanks again to everyone who replied, time to get back to some hardcore gaming!
