Hi everyone,

I have a really good desktop PC at home on my second floor, however I need to do some computing stuff in the basement. I'm looking at the new AMD AM1 socket that's coming up, but I remember seeing something else once that can solve my problem, I just can't remember what it's called.

Basically it was this: A small 'dummy' box (like the size of a Gigabyte Brix PC) that you hook up on the network that connects to a server (I'd have to configure my PC for that of course), but I can connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc to this box. It's like how you'd connect a bunch of weak computers that act as connections to a powerful server which you actually access.

Sorry if I'm being confusing, I'm just really having trouble remembering what this "box" is called.

Thanks!

To do this you would need a server application that would be able to accomplish this. You could either have something that would be able to delivery applications or an entire OS known as a VDI. I use Citrix at work that would accomplish this. Also there are some server products made by VMWare as well. These server applications are thousands of dollars to purchase. I'm not sure how much your looking to spend. I have never done research on other vendors to see it there are any free or cheaper options for this but that would be your first step to look into.

As far as the client(in your basement) you could use a thin clients as was mentioned before. They can be very small devices that connect to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor and would...

As far as the client(in your basement) you could use a thin clients as was mentioned before. They can be very small devices that connect to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor and would function as a separate computer. Many different of vendors make them and the clients themselves can be found for around $100.

This seems like a very expensive setup for just one additional computer, and if I was you I would get another PC and set it up in your basement. If you want to access files from your other machine you could set up shares.
Also, another idea which I have done before (depending on how far away your basement is) is to connect a KVM switch to you PC and run USB and Video cable down to your basement and it is like your computer is present in two locations with only one PC.
