Hey Guys....

This is my first time posting here, so I think I have a pretty stupid question, I don't know much about computers so that's why I'm here asking you all !

So, my computers PSU is a Corsair 500 watt , and the power grid around here is pretty flakey so I bought a UPS..

HOWEVER, my UPS is only an APC 550 VA / 330 Watts

Am I slowly killing my computer ?! Please help me !

Here are my specs

Windows 7 OS
8GB DDR3 RAM
i5-3570k CPU @ 3.8 GHz
GeForce GTX 660 Ti , 4GB memory
168 GB SATA SSD

I also have a 20inch monitor plugged into the UPS which has a mediocre refresh rate i think it sits around 60ish or something? I'm not 100% sure about the monitor. It's nothing crazy

Thanks everyone I really hope to hear back from you. The computer has not crashed or anything on me. I use Photoshop, and play games like Skyrim, World of Warcraft, COD , Guild Wars 2, which all seem to be sitting around 100fps (more like 60 on GW2). The thing I notice as of late, one of my Fans when I first turn on my computer (i don't shut down often), it accelerates and then goes really slow and it does this on and off for about a minute or so. Also, when first turning on my monitor there's a visible flashing for about a minute or so as well. So now I wonder if I'm slowly killing my computer by being an idiot and not buying the right UPS. All the other 4 fans seem to be okay, it's just the one. It's also happened when I've been on a high graphics game for a long time.

I bought this computer in January of 2013 so just over a year ago. I try to only shut it down on occasion as I've heard shutting down frequently is tough on your hardware - yet here I am possibly starving it of power haha.

Thank you Lords and Ladies !

i did a quick check of your wattage needs and your peak wattage need is app. 500 - 550 watts. add app. 50 watts for the 20" monitor and yes, your ups might be bottle necking the psu when the pc is under load.

you seem aware of the ups limitation, so why not act on it. regret is a terrible thing you know.

imo the fan thingy and screen flicker are not related to ups. also, the pc shut down business is not so dangerous, even govts shutdown on occasion no problem. and you have an ssd, so the pc is onine in like 5 sec. from power on.

edit:
- the fan speeding up/getting noisy during gaming is normal, also you get fans 1 dollar/pound/euro each

Probably your PC together with the monitor is not using more than 330 watts from your PSU. Otherwise the APC will sound the alarm and will automatically turned off.

You can buy a power meter monitor to check how many watts is your pc using. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Monitor-Monitoring-Energy-Socket-Ammeter-Analyzer-LCD-Watt-Voltage-Amps-/350965700159?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51b72f963f They are very cheap so are useful for determinated what devices to buy.

Thanks everyone you're so kind !

I think everything's okay, from what I heard as long as your power supply is getting AC Power , your computer is getting all the power it needs, and the wattage only relates to how much power it can put out when it loses AC

If anyone could confirm that, it would be awesome !!

Thanks again!

For now I've decided to hold onto the 200 dollars ( they seem pricey in Canada )

Note: The power has gone out, and I have enough time to save/close and shut down
