Hi guys!
My computer has officially died, so I'm in need for a new one. My budget is around 1400$, with a wiggle room of 300$. What I usually do on my computer is:

  • ■ Develop software (the heaviest program I use is probably Visual Studio).
    ■ Watch HD media (I have two screens: 24' and 19') and listen to music.
    ■ Do some graphic design using Photoshop.
    ■ Play games. Now, I'm not a hardcore gamer... I play some Team Fortress 2, and I'd like to be able to play GTA 5 when it does come out for the PC.
    ■ Run a VM or two in the background.
There is no need for any parts beside the computer itself. I think my only specific request is for the computer to have an SSD drive.
Thank you very much!

Thank you very much for the quick reply!
That graphics card looks a bit of an overkill... And shouldn't I take an i7 CPU?

i5 provides best value for money. Choose i7 only if you have to do CPU intensive work like rendering, video editing etc. If you want i7, I would recommend the i7 4770k-http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i74770k
About the GPU, I too thought it may be an overkill for you, but since it did fit in your budget, I recommended it. You can go for the gtx 780 if you think the "ti" is overkill. Here's the link-http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/. The evga one is equally good, but the gigabyte one is the fastest clocked.

If you're really willing to use your stretch budget, this thing is pretty beast:

If you would prefer to skinny it down, you could easily run on 16GB of RAM (less $150), you could reduce the size of the SSD by going with the 250 GB Samsung EVO (less $130) and you could slim down to a Nvidia 760 instead of a 770. I went with the larger drive so that you never have to be concerned about where your program or project files or stored and you have the 3TB disk for all your media and VMDKs. You could also push up to the IVY-E series of processors but that would increase your budget substantially for the processor and motherboard. I think you will be happy with that rig and it should fulfill all your needs.

I tend to do a lot of things at the same time, so I really think i7 is a good choice. Would you say replacing the first build you gave with that CPU and graphics card would work well?

Yes, it will. i7 4770k is a really nice option for cpu intensive purpose and the 780's performance is just great for the price you pay for it. No game will be laggy on 1080p ultra with the 780. And your CPU intensive apps will work like a charm.
