Ok, so for a little over a year now my computer has been crashing at random times, from right at start up to browser searching to running 3D modeling and rendering programs. Its starts with my screen going black followed by a lag in sound if I have music playing. I have upgraded the amount of memory in my computer, updated the display driver, and I have upgraded my BIOS. I have run GPU tests and temperatures are running normal. Anyone know what is the problem here? Here is some info it helps...

The music continues after the screen crashes, then it skips, and then sometimes it will buzz until it eventually stops.

That sounds like a driver crash. Here's a simple test you can do to fix it. Using a program like MSI Afterburner, reduce your core and memory clocks by 25mhz. Normally when I hear of this issue, its because of an unstable clock speed so reducing it slightly should fix it.

Unfortunately, the computer still crashed after changing the clock speeds, and the resolution changed again. Would reducing them more help, or is this another problem?

Hm. Try going to nividias site and getting a new driver. Normally the clock speed is the problem, but a 25mhz drop should be plenty to stabilize it. If that's not the case, it gets a bit more complicated. The only other issue I can think of is a failing GPU. In which case, since this is an integrated card, means a considerable expense to fix.

Is it possible to fix the problem by raising the clock speed? I noticed that the msi program showed the clock going above the set limit.

Going above the set speed in your case would be dangerous. integrated cards are not meant to be overclocked. Also, raising the clock speed is more likely to destabilize it. For instance, my 780 is overclocked by 125mhz. If i raise the clock another 50mhz, it will destabilize and crash my display driver. This is the end of what I can help you with. In a simple list going from easy to fix to hard, im at the end of ideas. Easiest thing is an unstable clock, but if lowering it didn't help then that's out. Next is a corrupted driver. But if you have the most recent, thats out. Only other issue I've seen like this is a failing device. Which since its a chip and not a standalone card, is difficult and expensive to replace since laptops are generally a pain to work on.

What you are describing can be any number of problems from software, to bad video card, bad power supply, bad ram, bad motherboard, bad CPU, bad hard drive, etc.... The only way way to find out what is going on is to try and narrow down the problem. Be warned, this might take a long time.

However, since you are using a laptop, this might be a little bit easier (less things to check for).

Generic things to try:
* First, the most likely thing: dust buildup. Check the dust build-up in the computer. Clean out any dust. You will need to open up the laptop to do this. (Of course, if this problem started when you got the computer new, then it's obviously not dust buildup. :) )
* Check all the fans in the system (video card, processor, motherboard, power supply). Make sure they all run pretty well when your computer is on. Hmm, dunno how easy this will be with a laptop... so I guess just feel the vents to see if air is flowing out of the laptop.
* Look at the Windows Event Viewer and try to find an event around the time of one of your crashes. See if any of the events report a certain error. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System This *might* help you narrow down the exact part giving you problems. Sometimes it can save you a lot of time figuring out the problem.
* Run a program that records your CPU and GPU temperatures and fan speed. Then after a crash happens, have a look at the log to see if there were any weird spike in temperature or weird fan speed changes.
* To eliminate software as the cause, you can run another operating system (like Linux or Haiku) from a boot CD or flash drive. Then run some intensive program or use the computer for a while and see if you get a crash. If you do, then it's not a software problem, but hardware.

RAM:
* Check your RAM with a memory test program to see if RAM is ok.

Hard Drive:
* Run "checkdsk /R" from the command line to check for errors. Also, go to your hard drive manufacturer's website and get their diagnostic software to test your hard drive. This might tell you if there are hard drive problems.

OS
* Run "sfc /SCANNOW" from the commandline to check your operating system for errors. This won't find many problems, just some of them.

Video Card
* Did you use the proper drivers from Nvidia's website and not from some other location? ... and are you using the latest drivers?
... or have you not messed with the drivers at all (and just left them as they were when you got the computer)? If you haven't messed with them since the computer was new, then they are probably ok (as the manufacturer probably set them up right ... although they'd be outdated by now).

That brings up another thing he can try.
Try reducing the core speed and memory clock as far as you can (more than 25mhz). If that stabilizes the computer, at least you will know for sure that the cause is the video card. :)
... and it will save you a whole lot of time trying out all those other things that I mentioned to narrow down the problem. :)

I read your suggestions. The only thing I can say is that its an integrated card. It's not OC to start and underclocking it any further, he may as well just use intel hd graphics. Also, he said his temps are running normal so dust probably isnt a factor. unless you are absolutely frying a card, I cant see heat crashing a driver. Actually, considering its a laptop, im starting to get concerned, this is a manufacturer specified build so they wouldnt make parts of it incompatible with the rest. RAM itself wouldnt cause an error this way, it would more than likely BSOD the entire system. The CPU technically doesn't control the GPU since it would have its own integrated processor and handle most of its own data processing.

Yeah, you are right; lowering the settings that much is definitely not a solution to the problem. :)
However, the only reason I wanted him to try that is because maybe it would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the problem is the video card. Then he wouldn't have to test any other parts. :) Also, you bring up a good point about the RAM and maybe hard drive probably not being the cause (as that would probably cause much bigger issues like a BSOD), so maybe you are right that testing those might not be necessary.

Then again, maybe it's something simple that we aren't thinking of. :)

Followup info.
I think pyr0_m4n's belief that the problem is related to the video might be right.

There is a manual for your computer here:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_precision_mobile/precision-m6500_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

Page 114, shows a picture of your video card's heatsink and fan. It *might* be possible that:
* the fan and/or heatsink on the video card might be clogged with dust
* ...or the fan no longer works right.

So... you could try:
* Opening up the computer and blowing out the dust (focus on that video card part you see in the manual).
* Try running the computer where you can see the fan from the video card at the same time ... and see if the fan still runs at a good speed.

Don't try removing any parts, like the fan or heatsink, though. Just remove the cover so you can see the parts. (While you are at it, you might as well blow out any dust you see on other components. Note: Don't use a vacuum as sometimes they can build up a static charge and damage components; I think that's how it goes. :) ... use something that blows air instead.)

here's the problem with that. The heatsink is built into the motherboard and covers all the parts. There is no way to take that apart without literally taking the entire laptop apart. If he had a dust issue, he would be reading temp spikes whenever he opened an application which he said he wasn't. That's why I'm hesitant to have him open it because I hate working on laptops for this exact reason. They're a pain to fix. The more I think about it, the more I'm wondering if there's a background application conflicting with the driver and putting it under stress. The reason for this being he said it happens at startup when there shouldnt be a heavy load. Im starting to think this problem is software based, maybe even virus based as it could be interfering with system operation.

Hmm... that's a good idea. In that case, maybe reinstalling the entire OS might be worth a shot? If possible backup everything and do a format of the entire drive before reinstalling.

Then again, I guess the sane thing to do might be trying some virus scans first -- I sometimes go to the extreme. :)

If it was my computer, I would also check things like the following to see if any conflicting program is running:
* all the startup items (in startup menu & msconfig)
* all the running processes in task manager
* all the services on my computer
* installed drivers in device manager

If you want to actually provide a list of all these thing running on your system, I'd be willing to check them all out for you (you'd probably have to make a screenshot of them all though).
Even if you do a clean reinstall, and the cause is really software or driver related, there is a chance you would end up installing the same thing again that caused the problem -- thus, I like to find out what caused it in the first place.

After writing all of that, I got to thinking.... There is one thing I think you should really try: look for an error in the Windows Event Viewer.

I had pretty good success using this technique to figure out a weird problem on a laptop (that I would have never guessed was the cause).

Wait for the next crash and keep track of the time it occurred.
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System
Look at the events that occured around that time and look for any errors or weird things reported (especially errors or warnings). Sometimes this will give you the clue you need to figure out what the problem is.

I also found some other commonly occurring errors relating to a shared NAT, and Kernel, one of which was critical, but I'm not sure if it was related to the hard reboot or if it was related to the crash.

Okay, I'll try to explain this as best I can. After reading through that list, I found some startup issues that may take some effort to be resolved. Good thing is, a lot of that list is not related to the problem:
1. Critical kernal error. That error is likely a hard restart. If you click on that error, it will most likely say "Windows failed to shutdown successfully or lost power" No big deal, you get those whenever you do a hard reset.
2. Application Virtualization Client 3057: This is a startup service that may fail to start. please follow this list EXACTLY to fix it
Open the "Services" control panel applet. (Use the search bar in the start menu and type "services")
Display properties for the service called "Application Virtualization Client". (its a giant list so just look for it)
Change the "Startup type" field from "Automatic" to "Manual".
3. CVHSVC 100 Client Virtualization Handler. This is related to MSOffice which shouldn't be an issue. There is a fix for it, but it involves messing with the registry which I very rarely recommend because if you don't follow instructions perfectly, it can damage the machine.
4. The NAT issue involved connection sharing and is related to your internet. Don't worry about this.
5. Wininit 11 None This issue is normally caused by antivirus disliking the wininit.exe application. Depending on your antivirus, this can be fixed by going to the list of allowed programs and adding wininit.exe to its list.
6. b57nd60a 4 None This event strangely has no data associated with it that I can find. Please find this message again and open it and post whatever extra data it gives you.

1. Event Log
Hey, this is great that you are providing this info, so thanks. :)
Anyways, I feel like I'm missing a piece of information in that log. Can you point out the exact time that you shutdown/crashed the computer and the exact time that the computer booted back up. The key is to look at those events that happened right before the crash/shutdown (aka right before you restarted the computer again). So... I just want to know which of those were before the crash and which were after. If that list is missing events from before the crash, then please try to get them again, if possible (scroll down till you find the events right before and right after the crash).

Anyways, I don't see much of interest from that list beyond what pyr0_m4n already dealt with, so if all the info is there, then I guess the Event log doesn't help much in this case.

2. Kernel memory dump
Now that I think about it, it was the "kernel memory dump" that solved my problem. If your computer is generating a "kernal memory dump" everytime it crashes, then this may be the perfect way to find out the cause. (However, it's possible your computer does not crash in a way that creates a memory dump.) Anyways, let's give it a shot:
* Right click on "Computer" and select "properties". Go to Advanced System Settings (which opens System Properties) > [Advanced] tab > under "Startup and Recovery" category, pick "Settings..."
* Make sure "Write an event to system log" is checked and "Kernal memory" dump is selected. The dump file location is probably listed as "%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP ... which is the C:\Windows directory.
* If all of this is already turn on, then go looking for the C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP file. If the date on the file is the same date as your last crash, then the system might have created a dump of the crash... which might be the key to finding the problem.
* If the settings were not turned on... wait for the next crash and see if a dump file is created.
* If no dump file is ever made (due to the way the system crashes), then I guess we can't use this option.

3. Did you ever check the temperatures?
I read through the previous posts, and I never saw where you mentioned the temperatures for your CPU, GPU core and GPU memory. If you never actually checked the temperatures, then you may want to to that. If you are unable to check your temperatures, then you may want to seriously consider opening up the computer and checking for dust and spinning fans -- dust is main cause for most people's unstable computers after years of use. Cleaning out dust on some laptops is actually fairly easy ... as all you have to do is remove the the covers you use to get access to things like the RAM and Hard Drives ... and then blow out the dust. You should not have to remove any parts, like a heatsink or fan (in fact, don't try removing any parts: that should only be a last resort). Anyways, you can give it a shot: just remove the plastic covers (the easy access ones for RAM, hard drive, etc... that your laptop has). See if you are able to see the video card and it's fan from that pdf file. If you can see it, great: then try blowing the dust out and making sure that fan still runs when the computer is on. If you can't see it, then I guess it's buried too deep; don't try removing other stuff.
A picture of your video card is on page 114 of this pdf:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_precision_mobile/precision-m6500_service%20manual_en-us.pdf
Also, the pdf *might* show you which covers are easy to remove to get access to the inside. I say might because I can't see some of the stuff in the pdf.

Okay, I haven't been getting notified of the responses, so sorry it has been a little while, I switched the Application Virtualization Client over to manual. The b57nd60a I think is related to a file for my internet driver.

Okay, since last posting here I was having trouble connecting to the internet on my college campus, I noticed that while I was unable to connect to the internet that my computer wasn't crashing. I don't know if this helps but it seems to only crash when I am connected to the internet.

Yeah, I have seen a USB drive (used for networking) cause the computer to blue screen. Are you getting actual blue screens or is the computer restarting on it's own? If so, there is an easy way to tell what is causing the blue screen/crash.
