If I purchase the R9 280X will I be able to use it to it's fullest potential?
If Not then what is the ceiling for this builds GPU to ruse everything it has?

Solution
It depends on your games.

Regardless, a good jump in gpu capability will get you more eye candy.

To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run your games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 50%.
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.

Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
set to 50% and see how you...

You could also experiment with removing one core in the bios. This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many cores.

If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system, and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.

I'm looking to get prepared for Star Citizen so getting the most out of my GPU will be the main factor..

Been comparing the HD 7970, GTX 770 and the R9 280X

Decided on the R9 due to it's #GB and 384 bit.

Running it on a 29in 720 atm but will be upgrading to 1080 come Black Friday next year.

You will be totally fine I would not worry about it the 6300 is a good cpu.

The vram and ram width are not great metrics to decide on a graphics card.
They are bundled into the overall performance level.
R9 cards are currently inflated in price because of bitcoin miners.
All three are comparable in performance.
The GTX770 will run quieter and have better drivers.
It is currently Tom's pick at that price level.
