My daughter was uploading music CD's for my on my Dell XPS 8500; apparently one of the CD's wasn't seated correctly when the drive closed. When the tray went into the tower it made all kinds of crunching/grinding noises, then the empty tray half opened & closed several times before finally fully closing. Now the tray will only 1/2 open and the CD is stuck inside. I've tried directions found on line for manually releasing the CD with no luck. Any ideas?

Try pulling on it. See if it will move a little. If not, open the side panel of the computer. It is usually the one on the left that opens. Then locate the screws that hold the drive in place. Remove the cables plugged into the drive, then push it forward and out of the case. The next step is to disassemble the drive. Remove the metal casing surrounding the mechanical parts. When that is done. Try to spin the gears and or adjust the CD so the drive will open.

Hello... Did you use the Staighten'd paper clip method through that small hole in the front bezel? You will have to pull on the tray too, to help force it open... You do not need any Power on the Drive to do this... But if it's still giving you too much resistance, then Yes, it is very easy to open the cover of the drive to find what is jamming the plastic gears, that drive the tray open and closed.
It is not un-common to find broken CD/DVD, make sure to clean out all the Plastic remains.
