Hello

My first MSI 970A-G46 setup was working perfectly, and was initially stress-tested with several programs, MemTest, Prime95 comes to mind, and never did it shutdown or give off any high temps.

One morning it was dead. As if there was no power. Nothing responded, everything was double-checked, PSU, CPU, RAM, GPU. I checked other parts in my setup, and my parts in other setups. The whole setup worked perfectly, never had a thermal shutdown, or any other shutdowns for that matter. I concluded it was the motherboard so i returned it, and today i received the new one. Same board.

I installed the new board, and here i am with an identical setup. All parts are the same, just a new motherboard, same model.

I booted up with my new motherboard and checked all temps, everything seemed fine, CPU and Sys Temps were in the high-30's low-40's C. I then started up a game, and after about an hour, the computer just turned off.

The powerswitch was flashing I couldnt turn the PC back on until i hit the PSU switch. Booting again, CPU and System are still at ~40C according to BIOS, but the Northbridge is warm enough to make an omelet.

Not once did the first setup ever get so hot you couldnt touch it with your fingers, like this Northbridge.

It is worth mentioning, that the first setup ran in a very badly circulated room during the summer, too hot for comfort, compared to my new place, a very well circulated room, and its winter. I enjoy the cold and my window is open most of the time, so room temp is way lower.

MSI 970A-G46
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2Ghz @ Stock speed
8GB Kingston HyperX @ Stock speed
Gainward GTS 450 @ Stock speed
1TB Samsung SATA
Win 7 64

From my point of view, as of this moment, there is no sense to this and i might just have a rotten apple. Should i return the motherboard or does anyone know what would cause something like this?

I have considered checking the cooler pasta on the Northbridge, but if i have to RMA this and they find out i did that, its goodbye RMA.

Thank you in advance

This is the warning from the G45 board which is basically almost the same as the G46.

My first setup was laying in pieces on my desk in a 30C room. This is in a case with lots of fans in a 18C room.

I dont want to install a cooling fan on something i know should work better.

I will call the seller tomorrow and RMA again :(
