Hey guys,

This is my first post ever on this form and really need some help (Hope this is the right Category)

I Currently have a 2009 Mac Pro (2.66ghz Quad Core, 8gb Ram 1066mhz, 1 Tb HDD) which i use for music production professionally. (Alot of Cpu heavy Virtual instruments) Up until now its been fine, but the newer virtual instruments are really hogging the cpu load and its beginning to show its age.

So planning a new build and wanted to keep it under 1000 Euros (1,400 USD). What id like to know is, would an i7 4770k (OC) be a big enough jump in performance to justify the build and replace the mac or would i need to consider an LGA 2011 build instead?

Geekbench puts the Mac Pro at around 8500 and the 4770k at roughly 14000 (Non-overclocked).

Was considering the 1150 Xeons but they are very expensive in comparison and seem to have worse specs to the i7 other than ECC support.

I've done a couple builds in the past before so no trouble in assembly, here are the rest of the considered specs. And yes i know, Awesome choice of Graphics card :)

Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3 (99.00 EUR)
Crucial M500 240GB SSD SATA3 (116.00 EUR)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB SATA3 (50.95 EUR)
Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 4GB (38.00 EUR)
Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 4GB (38.00 EUR)
Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 4GB (38.00 EUR)
Kingston HyperX Genesis DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 4GB (38.00 EUR)
Asus GeForce 210 TC Silent 1GB GDDR3 Low Profile (29.00 EUR)
Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H60 (64.00 EUR)
Be Quiet Pure Power L8 CM 630W Modular (85.00 EUR)
Fractal Define R4 Black Pearl (95.00 EUR)

P.S. If i wanted to do the build on the cheap, would the i5 4670k be suitable?

Thank you so much.

Solution
the i7 with HT would be a considerable leap, plus it will have better cooling than a mac. The i5 would also be a good leap and a cheaper option.

If you are getting a K series though you need an ASRock h87 mobo or a z87 mobo for the overclock support.
