Building NAS box

Solution
Then I would look for a mini ITX board built-in CPU with Gb NIC and 4 SATA ports.
Use Openfiler or FreeNAS in a 8/4GB USB as OS
Connect HDD to three SATA ports, 4th port will be use as last resource when you need more space with stand alone HW raid SPM393

Mean time you can have up to 8TB RAID5 (3x 4TB) using software RAID from the OS

How big of storage do you want to have ? Do you want a scale-ble NAS?
What are the clients...
There are quite a few OS you can use as headless NAS:
Windows, FreeNAS, OpenSambe, OpenFiler,, OpenE, FresBSD and of course Linux

Im not sure on what storage size i will have but i will prob start with a 4tb and upgrade it over time, because my main computer 4tb is getting really full. And as for clients i was mostly looking around windows or FreeNAS but im not sure what is the best choose.

also will having a small ssd improve it just for the os?
and im guessing the raid card will affect "scale-ble NAS"?
