I'm repairing a laptop that has a HDD S.M.A.R.T. failure and was wanting to know if making the recovery disc from it could copy the bad sector?

Also is there free alternatives to re-installing windows 7?

Solution
If you have the original activation key, and you don't care about having all the original software/bloatware, you can download the official Win 7 ISO, install, and install with your activation key.

Assuming that drive actually works to install on.
Hi

If the windows recovery files are on a bad sector of the hard drive it is highly likely the process making the Recovery DVD's will give you an error message and process fail.

Running Seagate, IBM/Hitachi or WD or similar Dos Hard disk diagnostics program
(available as a downloaded ISO file which needs to be burnt to a CD)
may be able to temporally repair a small number of damaged sectors for you or warn you that the disk is beyond repair or further use.

If a repair succeeds it stops Windows crashing if no critical files are damaged
Use correct program to match your hard disk brand

Free alternative to Microsoft Windows ?
Linux many versions available (choosing which one is the problem)
Open Office and variants such as LibreOffice are available for Linux & Windows to replace MS Office

So if I can make the recovery disc then I'm in the clear? It is a Hitachi HDD so I'll go to the site and further download proper utilities. Also I didn't mean alternatives to windows 7 I wanted alternatives to re-installing windows 7 if I couldn't make the disc that would cost nothing.

Will a 4.7GB DVD+R be enough or do I need to get something different?
Thanks for the suggestions mbarnes86 and USAFRet

Yes, that disk will work.

Hi

A recovery disk set usually requires 2 or 3 x 4.7 GB DVD+-r,
some can also use 1 x 9.4 GB double layer DVD but that is less reliable.

Are you just getting Smart errors at startup ? (from BIOS)
or you getting disk read errors from Windows ?

If the disk manufacturers diagnostics show your hard disk is failing then you need a new hard disk and a complete backup of any data on the hard disk.

Then fit the new hard drive and re install from the recovery DVD set (or Windows DVD)
(If the recovery images include Microsoft Office and other usefull software and the drivers for chipset, sound, graphics, network & wireless, power management etc it is preferable to a Windows DVD)

Yeah, I am replacing the HDD. I just needed to know if I could make the recovery discs from the faulty HDD or was there another way. Thanks for the input though and I'm not sure about the 4.7 GB vs. 9.4 GB. I think unless the 'Recovery Disc Creation' software has that option then it is a no go.
