Hello, i've bought this external hdd (Seagate GoFlex 500gb) two years ago. After around 5 months it started having problems. It takes forever to load when i plug it in any computer until the computers eventually hang up and stop working completely just because my external hdd was plugged in. I know it was alive because it works if i plug it in the tv instead to watch the movies stored or music and pictures until eventually after a few months of that it stopped working too.

I don't remember dropping it since it basically stayed plugged in my pc ever since i bought it but what i do remember is that i don't use safely remove before i shut the pc down because it stays plugged in there xD

i had a friend who have the same hdd who received a replacement usb cable from seagate since his is faulty so we tried it.
my hdd worked with his cable but it already prompts me to format maybe due to me trying to make it work by plugging it in and then giving up when it takes hours and it doesn't load or when the computer itself decides to hang up. did that many times (i was desperate xD)
so i just had it stored in a box for a year until now that i need a file saved in here for work that's why i can't just format it

here's what happens now when i try "fixing" it

1. since i don't have a usb cable (the original was faulty), i just plug it to the psu power connector and the sata cable in the mobo (these two were originally plugged in to the dvd rom)
2. the delay in startup and bootup is noticeable (about 10 seconds longer than normal) when the hdd in question is plugged in
3. it appears as Local Disk E: but i can't access it. disk management says it has RAW file system
4. i tried recuva but it doesn't work. the error says something about the file system
5. i tried getdataback, i don't own a legit copy i just downloaded a fat and ntfs version that i found in torrent but they won't even display the drive

after a couple of minutes it becomes an "unknown device" in the device manager and it disappears from disk management and from my computer, also bootup and startup speed is back to normal upon restart. it seems like my pc decided to just ignore it xD recuva also don't display the drive anymore but crystal disk info still recognizes it and here's what it looks like http://i.imgur.com/yknCnBH.png

when it was still displayed in the disk management i tried rightclick-format but it gave me an error. is there anyway for me to get my files back?

edit:

i found a sata cable so i plugged it in again in a different slot to get screenshots of the programs i used. aside from getting another partition name, the result from crystal disk info changed too. getdataback ntfs/fat still didn't recognize the device though and i saw that the device is listed properly in the device manager, driver update didn't do anything. it said it was up to date xD righclick-format option in the disk management i think also works, i just didn't dot it coz i'm afraid i can't cancel/undo that action since i still need some files

The first screen-shot "Fatal Device Hardware Error" sounds very much like the GoFlex drive has failed. Data recovery from a failed drive is only possible if done by a data recovery specialist service (mega expensive as it's used mainly by businesses and large corporations).

You can check for drive failure by testing it with SeaTools for Windows" (see link below) but testing will only be possible if SeaTools can "see" the drive in question.

There are two levels of testing, Short Test or Long/Extended Test. The latter is recommended for thorough testing.
