Acer Aspire with Vista OS(and Acer Enet) using Atheros wireless adapter cannot connect to NETGEAR router...All Windows updates are current and this computer was just reset to Factory. I used to be able to connect with that laptop to wireless router and I am currently connected with another computer...so it's not the router. Can someone please offer to remote connect and help ? I've tried so many things over the past 3days and I am sick to death from MS Windows and support/troubleshooting. Please feel free to call me - PHONE REDACTED - Someone Somewhere joe

Go to Acer's website and get the drivers for the WiFi card in your laptop - they might not be on Windows Update. Make sure that all the Optional updates are installed, too.

I updated Atheros Extensible Wireless LAN device driver from Acer site...restarted...tried to connect wirelessly...recognizes NETGEAR router (WPA-2 security enabled)(same as another Laptop is connected to)...entered passphrase...shows message - "Connecting to network is taking longer than usual"...then message - "Windows cannot connect to NETGEAR". Shows box - [Diagnose the problem]...clicked it and shows again -"Windows could not connect to "NETGEAR"

I have since did a router security type change and am now connected, but Failed to "Identify Network" with "Local only"...no internet still.

Might try connecting with a USB wireless adpater, then if that works, compare the settings it uses with those of the on board chipset

I don't have a USB wireless adapter, but I have a different laptop that IS connected to it, although
it's an Asus 8.1 and different internal wireless adapter. Would it have same settings and where would I find those if so?
I am going to see if it will connect to a different Wifi hotspot right now like my Android phone.
SAME...connects(secured with password)...says "Unidentified Network"- Local only...it has to do with Wireless Adapter settings.

Now I just connected to a different OPEN unsecured,Public network and have local AND INTERNET. This has to be something with adapter settings and wrong IP settings when connecting to a secured network. Please somebody help...next step for me seems like a sledgehammer out in the parking lot.

Might be in the settings, or could be the chipset is bad

Any idea where I should start with settings....I just connected to a OPEN, unsecured Network and had Local and Internet, so must mean chipset is ok.

Might be a conflict in security being used, might be WPA, check your router/modems security settings, then compare to the laptops

I have a Netgear's WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Firewall Router, G router, 54mbps,2.4Ghz, 802.11g

NETGEAR router is set to WPA2-Personal, AES with Network Security key (password)

Where do I see my Atheros adapter settings?

Here are ADVANCED NETGEAR Router settings- Advanced Wireless Settings

Wireless Router Settings
X Enable Wireless Router Radio

Fragmentation Threshold (256 - 2346):
