Speakers work fine until unplugged and then plugged back in.

So my setup at my desk goes like this, I have my PS3 hooked to my monitor via HDMI and my PC hooked up to the same monitor via the regular VGA cables (standard blue ones).

The problem is, when I switch the monitor to HDMI to play the PS3, I have to remove the speaker jack from my PC and plug it into the monitor. When I normally start my PC, the speakers work fine, and I can switch from headphones to speakers willy nilly. But, once I unplug the speakers to hook up sound for the PS3 and later plug the headphones back into the PC, I get the red X over the speakers, and a message saying no speakers/headphones are connected.

If I restart my computer it will work just fine, but that's only if the speakers are plugged in when I do so. I find this really odd and have installed the latest updates for my sound card. I'm at a loss, so any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated :/

The only saving grace is that I'm running Windows 8 and the restarts don't take too long. Though it's still very annoying.
