Hello,

I'm getting a new computer and peripherals and I good use some advice on what to look for in a keyboard and mouse. Should I use wired or wireless? Is there a certain brand or specific one that is known to be good? Stuff like that.

I'm not too picky with gaming genres. I play RPGs, FPSs, RTS, basically anything that catches my interest. Off the top of my head I plan to play games like the Witcher, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim, and RTSs that I can't quite place atm. I don't think I need anything fancy and if it's cheap, but still of good quality then all the better.

Really just a brand or wired/wireless and I'll probably be good, but any specific suggestions are always helpful. Thank you in advance.

Well, I take it you're a casual gaming so I'd recommend just getting a decent office keyboard (nothing too fancy) and a cheap gaming mouse, here are your guidelines for the mouse:
What to focus on when buying a gaming mouse?
- Focus on Optical Sensors (AVOID LASER SENSORS AT ALL COSTS!!)
- Focus on Good Build Quality (with rubber grip and durable body)
- Shape, size, weight and or customizability (macros, extra buttons, etc..)
- Focus on polling rates, tracking speeds and "g acceleration"
- Focus on negative reviews of the product then move onto the positive reviews (Get to know the flaws of the mouse you're buying)
- Try to avoid wireless mice/keyboards
- Completely avoid laser mice
- Ignore DPI or a.k.a CPI (Any mouse with 1000+ CPI...

Reason to avoid laser sensors is because they're neither practical nor as performing as an optical one and since you're a casual gamer then you're off good with a decent mouse that has at least 500Hz polling rate and a decent IPS tracking speed of at least 50 inches/s.

Just try to get a mouse with a good durable build with decent materials.

As for the keyboard, I don't think they're worth the money that is wasted on them, just any keyboard will do.
