Network randomly disconnects while playing games

Hey guys,

I know there are alot of other thread like this but there are just to many to find one with the exact same problem as mine.
When I start a game my internet will disconnect and reconnect within 5 to 10 seconds. This keeps going on while gaming and there is no pattern in it, its all random. Sometimes I can play for an hour and sometimes I can't even play for 10 minutes.

My internet connection is pretty good so that won't be the problem:

My current setup:
i2500K @ 4.5
MSI P67A-C43 (b3)
EVGA GTX 770
8GB G.Skill 1333 ram
Asus XONAR STX soundcard
CAT 6 internet cable

The next things I've tried so far:
Reinstall Windows 8
Update drivers (with the reinstall)
Made sure the cap of the internet cable was properly attached

The only things I can think of right now are:
Broken internet cable / cap (maybe I'll look at this today)
Broken internetcard
Software related issues

So far I can't figure it out and I'm no expert on systems.
Anyone who has / had the same problem and got any advise / solution to this problem? It is really driving me mad...

Are you hosting a Game Server or just connecting to some one else's?

I have seen this problem with hosted Game servers because some of the ISPs throttle hosted servers. If this is the case I suggest using a proxy server to hide you transaction information from your ISP. If this is not the case then we need some info on how you connect to your router. Are you using WiFi by chance?

Run a tracert to some address like 8.8.8.8

Then open 2 command windows and ping the first 2 hops in the trace continuously. The first should be your router in your house and the second the ISP.
When you detect loss in your game go into these to windows and see if they also detect the loss. Problems in the first hop indicate a issue with your router or possibly your computer. Issues in the second with no problems in the first indicate a problem with the connection to the house from the ISP.

Any problems beyond are going to be either issues in the internet, the game server or a software issue. You could ping the end game server if it will let you and see if that give you any useful information. Mostly these you can do nothing about unless you find a patch for your game if that is the problem.

@Jim: I'm connected with a CAT 6 cable instantly to out Techicolor modem, so there's nothing in between that can cause any problems. And I think hosting games isn't the problem here. I do play Diablo 3 and sometimes create a party (I guess this is hosting? Not sure how it goes in Diablo) but the disconnects also happen in WoW.

@Bill: I will run a test and let you know what the results are.
UPDATE I ran the tracert and pinged the top 2 (modem and server / provider) a couple of times. Both show no losses as you can see here:

Alright I did what you said and these are the results, seems to be a problem at home I guess?
First on is the modem, second one the provider.

Try to ping your loop back to see if the problem is in your NIC or your Router/Modem. To ping the loopback ping : 172.0.0.1.

If you get no packets lost then the problem is in your Router/Modem or the wire connecting them. Try changing wires or if your Router/Modem has multiple ports try changing ports.

If you do lose packets on your loop back try getting a new NIC for your computer.

Rinse and repeate.

General failure normally means the PC has detected some issue with the nic. If the nic was ok but the router was not responding it would have given a time out failure. You may have messages in the event log in the PC telling what it is. It could be a DHCP timeout but that is unlikely. You can set it to a week or so in the router and it should solve any dhcp timeout issues.

I'll have a look at both solutions! Thanks for the fast respones btw, really appreciated.

UPDATE: I tried to ping 172.0.0.1 (as you can see in the picture below) without succes. Does this mean I have to get my PC a new NIC?
