USB & network Drives misnamed - name doesn't match when with new mapped drives

This seems to be a common problem I've experienced with Windows after some use (fresh installs don't seem to be effected). When network drives are added and removed there seems to be some retention of the names and when another drive is added on that same drive letter it uses the previous name. Is there a way to fix this?

Is there a way to clear past drive mappings and USB mounts?

Go to Windows Explorer->Tools->Map network drive. There is a "Reconnect at logon" check box in the window. Select the drive mapping you want to clear and its associated folder, clear the check box, and click Finish. Log off, and log back on.

I'm not sure about the USB drives because mine doesn't do that. If the drives are being removed without first unmounting them that might cause the problem. Try mounting one, accessing it, and then unmounting it via Windows Explorer. Then log off and back on again.
