Will AMD A10-6800k handle AMD Radeon R9 280x? Do I have to overclock my cpu?

That CPU will be able to handle it yes, it wont bottleneck it.. But the CPU performance isn't all that great so in CPU heavy games like Battlefield 3/4 MP you will get less of an FPS than you would with something like an 8350/4770K

There will be a bit of a bottleneck, as in you will be limited by your performance in just about any game by your CPU. An 8320 would be a large improvement.

Nothing to worry about thought, it may be only like 5-10 FPS in the worst cases... Plus the 280x delivers enough FPS anyway for you not to worry...

That is exactly the problem. It is a waste of a 280x, because the 280x will not make up for the poor CPU. A common misconception is that if you have a powerful GPU, that it will make up for a poor CPU. This is not true at all. If you get 20 FPS with a 6800k, adding 10 780 ti's in SLI will not get you any further than 20 FPS.

Is it worth it to buy the R9 280X, or should I go with MSI Radeon R9 270X Hawk?

But the 6800K as a CPU alone isn't that bad? It is probably the equivalent to your 4100.. I had a 4100 OC to 4.1Ghz before my 8350 and my 4100 + HD 7770 could play BF3 MP just fine...

The 280x is better, but a CPU upgrade and 270x is much more worthwhile. The 6800k is not equivalent to the 4100. The 7850k comes close, but not quite.

I was using examples of APUs, as that is the closest APU to the 4100. He ideally needs a new motherboard and CPU.

Well, the 280x is much better, but for the price difference you can get a motherboard and processor like a 6300, which will be a large improvement.

Get the 280x, it will perform great with your 6800k and it will perform even better when you get your FX 8350.. you wont be dissapointed

Yeah, the 280x is better. Just get a new CPU when you can. Get the 8350, or the 8320 if you're going to overclock it.
