So, I'm building a computer. Got it all delivered on Thursday.

The hardware:

Intel i7 4770K
Asus Maximus Vi Hero

The symptoms on the Motherboard:
1) The CPU led lights up on the board
2) The QCode: 00 - "Not used"

The CPU fan turns on.

I've been looking for solutions online since Thursday night, but nothing seems to work.

Does this just mean that the CPU is fried? Brought it to my local hardware store but they didn't have a system to test it on. What can I try? I get no output to the screen. The power cables and RAM are properly connected.

Thanks

Follow these steps:

Disconnect all the cables that are currently connected to your motherboard.
Remove all the components from it also.
Put it on the box that it came in.
With everything disconnected and removed and your motherboard still on the box, remove the CMOS battery for 5 minutes.
Insert the battery back into place.
Install your CPU with its stock heatsink.
Insert one stick of RAM into the DIMM_A2 slot.
Connect the 24 pin and 8 pin power connectors.
Power up your system with the Start button.

Q-code 00 usually means a CPU that is not compatible, but the Intel I7 4770K is. Remove the CPU carefully and check for bent pins in the CPU socket. Re-seat the CPU and with only the CPU and power, then try to start the system. If you still get the, q-code 00 either your CPU or motherboard is bad and you should RMA them or return it from where you purchased them. Before sending the motherboard back put back the socket cover carefully, sending the motherboard back without the socket cover voids the warrantee.

Thanks for the quick replies!

Removed the CMOS battery for over an hour (I had already removed/unplugged everything).

Still have the same problem. Perhaps the problem is with the BIOS. So: this might be a bit of a stupid question but how do I update the BIOS?

I've found and downloaded a file "MAXIMUS-VI-HERO-ASUS-1301.CAP" on the Asus website. I know that I have to rename this to M6H.CAP and put it onto a USB stick. Is this right? I've read something about a "renamer" (program)? How do I proceed?

Thanks again.

There is USB port next to the BIOS flashback button on the bottom, which you insert the the USB with the renamed BIOS. Press and hold the BIOS flashback button until the button starts to flash. When it stops flashing the BIOS has been updated. Did you align the CPU properly when you inserted it and latch it down The triangle should have been in the lower left hand corner.

Update:
I updated the BIOS and it works! You beautiful, beautiful people!

For anyone reading this in the future: I downloaded the latest BIOS from the ASUS website, renamed the .CAP file to M6H.CAP, and put that on a USB Stick. Then put it into the designated USB port (which is marked - greyish). Plugged in the Power, and held down the USB BIOS Flashback button for a couple of seconds. An LED Light for about 30 seconds. That's it, then I turned it on.

So, at least now it's lighting up and giving me an error code of 99: Super IO initialization.

A step in the right direction. If anybody knows what this means for me, I'd be very grateful. Just relieved that the CPU works.

EDIT: Thanks howardp6. That's exactly what I did. Great community you have here.
