Is this a good powersupply?

I purchased a computer from cyberpowerpc, and the power supply i have chosen is a standard 80 plus certified power supply-600 watts. Is this a good power supply? According to cyberpower, my system needs 500 watts and i have chosen 600 watts. Is this power supply good for future GPU/CPU upgrades? I will always run 1 graphics card so did i make the right choice? Thank you :)

Hi - If it can truly deliver 600w then yes it is sufficient for any current gen GPU system. Usually prebuilts
skimp on the quality of the components (PSU especially).
Off hand I don't know who the OEM is for that PSU, but if you could post the specs from the sticker affrixed to
the side of the PSU it would be helpful. Also, the the UL# should be there as well, a number below a
RU(the R will be backwards)

Plz read, In an older thread here on Tom's a user described his experience with cyberpowerpc/xtremegear PSU:

What is the combined 12v amps?
It is rare that both rails can put out their max at the same time.

48 amps is a lot, I suspect the combined is closer to 42amps, or should be for a minamum 600watter.
Edit
Top quality 600watters are in the area of 46 to 50 watts.

thats all the information that has been presentend to me, i have not yet recieved the system, all i can do look at the 600 watts and think that it should be good enough. what makes a power supply good or not? Im just hoping it will run everything just fine without destroying my entire system. Would they sell me a 600 watt power supply that cant run a 500 watt build?

Of course they would sell you a power supply, that won't put out what the label says.

There are more crappy power supplies on the market, than good ones.

A good power supply has much better componants.

When a good power supply fails, it deosn't take the whole computer with it, because it has circuit protection, and cheep ones don't.

Will it work? probably.

If it is overloaded it will run hot.

It probably won't overload, but if it fails, you may need a new computer.

Hi - yes there is hope that your sys will run fine, it's most likely the same PSU in the link. Xtremegear is
cyberpowerpc's handle for their PSU's not whether they are std or xtreme.

You just need to be aware that it is a lower quality PSU & could cause problems.
It's back to what I said on prebuilt's, lower quality components, especially the PSU.

I had a similar situation, I put a low quality PSU in my PC before I knew any better, as soon as
I found out I replaced it even tho I had not yet got a discrete GPU(had to wait 2 more month's).

Not sure that PSU would have harmed my system, but to me it was worth waiting for the GPU to
not take that chance.

do you think these horror stories about other peoples psu's blowing up is common or just the vocal minority? I Will be able to upgrade the power supply within 6 months and not right away.

Thank you for your help, i am very informed, and will hopefully look to cyberpower for any PSU problems i encounter. Appreciate the feedback.

Like toyftw said, we are just giving you all the info.

I believe the odds are that it will be OK.

12 years ago I was running the crappiest Allied power supply.
It ran so hot, one summer night, just a few seconds after I turned it off, it set off the smoke detectors.

Electrical coils get hotter, for a few minuted after you shut them off, as cooling stops abruptly.

I still have it, and it still works.
I won't ever use it in a computer again.
