I've updated my HP 6720s CPU. Previously it had Intel Celeron M CPU 530 @1.73 GHz
and now I replaced it by Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5870 (2.0-GHz, 800-MHz FSB, 2-MB L2 cache).
The problem that I have now is that when I power up my laptop after Windows logo all I have got is blurry image on display and some random dots. Can't see a thing! To bypass this problem first I have go to Safe mode, then restart it and then it's all ok. If I skip Safe mode part all I've got is described blur on display after booting.

I already tried to update Bios, reinstaling Windows and it didn't help. The problem is still the same,no matter if I run laptop on battery or via power supply.

Is there some of software that can identify problem and fix it?

Please advise. Thank you in advance!
Here are specs:

Motherboard: HP
model: 30D8 KBC Version 83.0C
Chipset: Intel GL960 Rev. C0
Southbridge: Intel 82801HBM (ICH8-ME) Rev. B1

Previous processor:
Intel (R) Celeron (R) M CPU 530 @1.73 GHz
Current processor:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5870 2.0-GHz

Someone told me that this could be FSB problem, is there some user friendly app to solve this by automatic option?

Solution
Hi
1. the source of the problem is that you are trying to push the GL960 chipset way too much.
http://ark.intel.com/products/29830
it was made for single core celeron fsb 533 and max 2gb of ram at ddr2-533 (u r using dual core not even at 667 but 800mhz)
2. there is a work around. it looks like GL960 is a striped version of gm965 or pm965 and it can handle more than Intel says...
3. long story made short: try/buy 1 stick of ram with max frecvency of 266mhs=ddr2-533 (the second stick can anything 533,667,800) and TOTAL max 3gb !!! plus they don't work in any order (if they don't work from the first attempt just REVERSE THEM)
good luck
pls post results if u haven't abandoned the "project" already.

Hi Jim! Thanks for your help! Yes I've reinstaled drivers, updated Bios, reinstaled Windows 7 from scratch, even tried Win Xp but the problem remains. Tried the Last known configuration, also nothing...
In safe mode display is standard in the center and empty on both sides 'cause it doesnt load video driver in safe mode. Then I simply restart and everything works fine, full screen, no interuptions, nor driver issues. I tried to update drivers through Hp update, and Windows update, tried Driver agent and all is up to date. Even Intel media accelerator is up to date.
So, long story short:
- If I power laptop, after Windows logo on start up, display is blurry and on some parts pixelated, can't read what it says;
- If I press F8 and go to Safe Mode and then restart everything is fine and video driver is working fine.
I'm now on laptop at least four hours and everything is working fine. Until the next power up....

Thanks again!

With Celeron inside everything works fine. Before and after upgrade. Tested twice to be shure. The thing is Celeron was too slow for apps that I use daily (Ableton/Reason - keeps crashing with note CPU to slow..)
I believe FSB is the problem 'cause CPU is compatible with the main-board. I just don't know what software to use that would be user friendly so it can optimize system without me going to BIOS.. that is to complicated for my humble knowledge...

Not yet, didn't do that before so I don't know what program to use and how to do it. Can you recommend some app and what exactly I have to do. Thanks ;)

Unfortunately I do every thing through the BIOs. If you go to the website for your mother board manufacture they should have some utilities for you. The problem is mother board manufactures did really start creating UEFIs (graphical bios editors) until after this mother board was created so I am not sure there is any other way other than doing it through your BIOs.

If you know the manufacture try Youtubeing it there are usually guides in Youtube for most mother boards on how to configure the BIOS settings.

Hi JIm! Thank for your time to solve this problem, I really appreciate it. My laptop is HP Compaq 6720s so BIOS is kind off limited. I read the article from above but on my machineBIOS it's quite different. I'll try to find some cpu clocking app and try to down clock a cpu bit by bit. Can you tell me what exactly I have to change and what app I should use, cause I'm a newbie to those sort of things..? Thanks again

unfortunately every BIOS is different. Unless I have the exact same model of computer in front of me I can not help. There should be an advanced section in your BIOS. I did some research and I am not sure you can get to these in your computer. Try looking for a manual for your laptop that covers this.

You can try here...

Unfortunately bios is very limited, no fsb setting, it has pretty striped version. I guess I am in the dead end street again. Thanks for you help and persistence. I appreciate it.

Thanks a lot for the solution! I had had the same problem after replacing Celeron M540 with C2D T7500 on HP Compaq 6720s laptop with GL960. Then I found this topic, inserted one stick of DDR2‑533 (with 266-MHz FSB) and now all is working perfectly. That's the only way, so I found the same method on several Russian forums as well.

Thanks a lot!!!
Works perfect with C2D T7100 and 2 sticks of memory 2gb fsb800 and 512mb fsb533

HI
I'm glad it solved your problem
but i have 2 small observations "Works perfect" ... maybe not ... performance is decreased this way ...
and the term fsb is only for cpu (for ram is speed or frequency)

HI dear mmvv80!
Tnanks for your reply!
Naturally, I understand, what we've done. It works much better, than with its factory Celeron M530)) And without any artifacts on the screen like dying video card or crashes needing reboot for working.
Needless to say its a laptop from 2008, and where it needs, when were talking about performance))
But the policy of the vendor is unexpected: 6720s with celeron and with c2d have 2 different motherboards (maybe just fw or bios), wifi card can't be changed with other model.. thanx it doesnt needs its own software, like iphone..

Hi,
policy of the vendors is a total mystery to me too. I've seen 10-20 models of toshiba with the same motherboard !!! and and 3 laptops of the same model with 3 motherboards.another thing, for 2 different models the difference was just the wifi and cpu
is same with hp and acer maybe others too
other than confusing the customers what do they gain ?

is that wifi tested recently on another laptop ?
