It is all relative. It depends on the number of cores, hyperthreading, cache and other things. The clock speed alone does not determine this only bench barks can tell you which is, "better". The other issue is what is your definition of better?...

- Looking for best speeds.
- Looking for best bang for the buck.
- Looking for best architecture.
- Looking for best temperatures and longevity.
- Looking for GPU to CPU compatibility.

This is why knowing which CPU is better is a grey area unless we know exactly what it is you are trying to do with it.

As for 4th. vs. 3rd. gen for the most part 4th gens are, "better" because they have newer architure which will help with better RAM and more lanes for your graphics cards.

Sir i have pretty old Laptop right now.. i need to asl u that if I want to buy laptop what shud i prefer ?? cos in my price range i m getting Intel Core i5 4th generation with just 1.6 ghz speed.
So is it better to have 3rd gen laptop with 2.6 ghz instead of 4th gen less processor speed??

If you are buying a laptop I would go with the 4th gen CPU because it should use less power and will improve your battery life.

Chances are the 4th gen laptop is newer and you will see longer life out of the newer laptop. I would say even if the 3rd gen is faster the benefits of the 4th gen will most likely out way the marginal speed differences.

just post the laptop models' names, model numbers and prices so we can compare and recommend. if it's between those two cpus and both laptops lack discreet gfx, then i'd choose the 4th gen core i5 since it should have better integrated graphics. however, when it comes to laptops, there are many more variables to consider, such as - display, battery size, storage, memory and so on.

HP Pavilion 15-N037TX
http://paklap.com/4th-generation-haswell/hp-pavilion-15...
HP Pavilion 15-E014TX
http://paklap.com/3rd-generation-ivy-bridge/hp-pavilion...

strangely, i cannot find reviews on either of these laptops. so i only have the specifications to compare. from the specs, the "15-E014TX" model looks better. the cpu has higher base clockrate and turbo, hard disk drive is 250GB more than the "15-N037TX". it's more power hungry than the "15-N037TX" model though. the core i5 3230M cpu uses more power than the i5 4200U.

i couldnt find either.... why is that so??

i don't know for sure. may be these laptops are for specific geographic regions. so most reviewers, who are usually in u.s. or in europe, don't review these. when i googled the model numbers, most of the websites seemed to be from asian region.
