If I make a backup from my computer on Windows 7, can I put it on a Windows 8 computer?

I am going to be building a computer soon, and was wondering that if I made a backup of my computer that runs Windows 7, would I be able to put it on a completely different Windows 8 computer?

I won't really be using a program. I mean like if I backup my computer onto an external hard drive (using the default Windows 7 backup in the control panel) and if I plugged that hard drive into my new computer which will be running Windows 8, would I be able to "restore" from the backup placed on that hard drive?

1. If you're building a new computer, why is it already running Windows 8?
2. That backup is particular to the original hardware. Seeing all new hardware, it will choke
3. Licensing - depending on exactly what Windows 7 version you have, it might deactivate itself
4. 1 license, 1 PC. If you want to use the existing license on the new PC (if you can), you can't also use it on the old PC

I don't mean it will already be running Windows 8. I would install it and then I would try and restore from what I had. I guess it doesn't really matter though.

Then why install 8 first?

If you're building a new PC, install the OS. And then your games/applications. A 'Windows backup' made on one PC can't be automagically ported over to a whole new PC.

And in any case...1 license, 1 PC.

I suggest you backup files and partitions except system partition(win 7), then restore them to win 8 machine with third-party software such as aomei backupper.
Is that what you mean?
