Question from a client: Is a K4000 or Titan better for 3D work on Linux? 10 bit output is nice, but not sure about everything else.

Solution
adamtron,

Deciding between a K4000 and Titan for 3D is going to be dependent on the applications used. For example, in Maya and Solidworks, a Quadro is essential to run the viewports- a $175 Firepro V4900 will surpass a $1,000 Titan. However, in Inventor a GTX- the Titan, will have the advantage. With both cards there are benefits by way of CUDA acceleration in a lot of Autodesk, Adobe, and Dessault (Solidworks, Catia). For most rendering applications- not all- the CPU is more important- clock speed and number of cores available.

If your client is using applications that together seem to require both cards, then I would suggest a Quadro K5000, which appears to run everything well.

I have this same dilemma, and have looking into the possibility of some sort of dual boot configuration where one configuration would boot to a Quadro as primary and the other to a GTX, but it seems that the card would have to selected as primary in BIOS for each change. As I have two workstation systems, I have considered running one with a Quadro and the other with a GTX and on a KVM switch!

If you list the applications used, and something about the system being used, I might be able to comment more specifically, although I'm not knowledgeable about Linux.
