Intel Core 2 Extreme 2.66GHz vs. Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz?

I currently have a Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz processor in my computer, and I am looking to upgrade to an Extreme. Is a 2.66GHz Extreme better for playing games like COD: Ghosts?

My rig:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz

Before you say something about my RAM being below the requirements for Ghosts, the game runs fine with it. I am looking at upgrading that too. I just want to know about the CPU.

If there is anything I can get that's better than the Extreme, what is it? I can only use an LGA-775 CPU.

  1. Does your mother board support an Intel Q9550 Quad Core?

If you are stuck with just getting a QX6700 then yes it is way better. Here are the bench marks...
  2. I believe so. I don't really know how to check what motherboard I have, but I haven't had any issues with compatibility before.
  3. There should be a make and model number stamped on the Mother Board some where. If you find it just Google it and look on the manufactures webpage to see what CPUs it supports. You may need a BIOs update for some which should also be on their page.
  4. I think the motherboard supports that. My motherboard's a G33 chipset.

Great then I would go for the quad core over an extreme addition dual core. You will see better bang for your buck.
  6. Thank you, I will go with that then!
