Xeon E3 or i7??? I have asked this question before but that has been some time ago. I am needing a good cpu that will be used for video editing for up to 4-5 hours a day. I know a Xeon is made for 24/7 use and comes from a better dye so I was wondering what people's thoughts were. There will be no overclocking so don't go there. Thanks.

The Xeon e3 1230v3 and up come from the exact same die as the Haswell i7 line. The e3-12x5 models have integrated graphics. If you don't want to overclock, the Xeon e3 is a no brainer. The 1230v3 is $100 cheaper than the 4770k and offers 95% of the performance at stock speeds. The 1240v3 and 1245v3 are still cheaper than the 4770.

It won't have the iris pro that the i7 has.
It's not an unlocked CPU.

You need to specify what video editing software you are using.

*Your question is also difficult to answer as the TOTAL BUDGET is important as well. For example, if you're editing a large video file you may want 32GB of DDR3 memory rather than a faster CPU with less System memory.

I consider Workstations for professionals who absolutely need the best and can afford it. If you want a more reasonable setup then an i7-4770K might be the best CPU, but again the total budget needs to be known.

Get the Xeon and you will need a video card since that processor doesn't have integrated graphics. Overclocking isn't necessary. You can do your video editing just fine at the stock CPU speed.
