Windows 8 laptop freezes constantly

My windows 8 laptop has been operating fine. Today though, it's freezing whenever I turn it on within a few minutes. I'm not running any programs when it happens, I haven't downloaded anything recently, it's just being a piece of shit. I was thinking about refreshing windows. Will that help? If not, what else should I do.

I can't tell if it's a hardware or software issue from the information provided.

1) Rollback to an earlier System Restore point if possible (first one before the issues started)

2) Burn an UBUNTU DVD and see if it runs okay (aside from the sluggishness of running form DVD).

3) run MEMTEST for a full pass www.memtest.org
