Hi guys, went to turn on pc this morning, and it cut out after about 10 mins.

Turns out the cpu overheated as the cpu fan wasn't spinning. I think the problem is the fan header, as, when plugging in the old intel, stock cooler, that fan wouldn't work either.

The motherboard is an Asrock z87 extreme 4. Next to the 4 pin header is a 3 pin, could i use this to power the cpu fan, (Zalamn max9000).

I still have all original motherboard packaging.

Thanks

check to see if the fan itself is bad. RMA if you can. if not, sure plug it into the 3pin, but when you start up in bios disable the "post error message" for cpu fan check. or similiar if your mobo has one.
Hi

You may consider it good or bad that the BIOS did not shut the system down as there was no working CPU fan at post

See if the fan works on the other 3 pin fan header (it should)
read the user guide as one wire will not be used and it may not work first time you try

It may well run the fan at full speed but that is better than not running.

Also check the BIOS setting for the CPU fan speed control and consider reseting cmos before confirming it does not work.
