Well, with his Motherboard they do have a BIOS update, which can support AM3+ CPU's depending on his Revision of the Motherboard. If its AM3B and with the current BIOS, it will work and support it.

Apparently, his M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 can use AM3+ processor, but he is going to have to flash his BIOS with a beta version

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A89GTD_PROUSB3/#support

Asus has apparently manufactured some AM3 motherboards with one extra hole each so that AM3+ processors would fit.

Here's the list of AM3 motherboards that Asus manufactured with an extra hole each so that they can support AM3+ processors (with beta BIOS updates, of cause)

AMD 890FX/SB850:
*Crosshair IV Extreme
*Crosshair IV Formula
*M4A89TD PRO/USB3
*M4A89TD PRO
AMD 890GX/SB850:
*M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
*M4A89GTD PRO

Well, if he flash his BIOS to the beta version and get an AM3+ processor to work properly on his motherboard, then more power to him.

Obviously, there's no official support for this. That's the reason Asus hasn't taken those BIOS updates out of beta phase.
