I am trying to network using the network switch GS105.

Here is basic synopsis:

Computer timing system in which I have 3 laptops and a video camera.

When I hook up the camera directly to a laptop (via Cat6 cable) everything works fine.

When I try to run the video camera through the switch, it seems to work fine for a while (activity lights on the switch constantly blink like they are supposed to). Then the lights on the switch go solid and the main laptop tells me that the camera has been removed and I have to reinitialize the video interface to get the camera to work again.

I can network and share files on all 3 laptops just fine.

After speaking with the manufacturer of the timing system, since the system is working as intended when hooked directly up to a laptop, the issue has to be the switch.

Question is: Is there some sort of setting in the switch I could change (like how you can admin a router)?

Could it just be a bad switch?

Any ideas as to what else I could look into?

What is a "computer timing system", and what does it have to do with your video camera?

Switches are pretty dumb devices, I doubt there's anything wrong with the switch. I would look at the camera for the problem. One thing you can try quickly is to move the camera's Ethernet cable to a different port on the switch. If you only have 3 laptops and one camera then there should be a fifth port open (if it's not being used by something else, that is). Or, if all the ports are occupied, try swapping the camera port with one of the laptops. If the problem follows the camera cable, then most likely the problem is with the camera. Or the camera cable. Try swapping cables also. Rule out the easy problems first (bad cable, bad switch port).

It allows us to do automatic timing and not handheld stopwatches... more accurate. Its all one system.... the camera hooks into the laptop via Ethernet cable.... but since I need more than one Ethernet port the need for the switch.

All combos of ports I can think of. With one coming in from the camera and one out to the laptop. I have even just tried those two cables.

Like I said... when it it hooked up directly to the laptop it works flawlessly. It just "disconnects" when it is hooked up to the switch. And it's random... can be two mins... can be 10 mins.
