Okay, so asking this on behalf of a firend. He has just purchased an Asus GTX 760 which requires one 8 pin to power.
His PSU only has one 6 pin.
He has this adapter http://i.imgur.com/yClz36N.jpg
He also has a 2x molex to 8pin.
Is there any way to make this setup work without replacing the PSU?

Solution
Getting the Powercool would just be trading one piece of garbage for another. The Corsair CX is better but it uses cheaper capacitors that have been founf to have longevity issues. The XFX alannm37 posted is a very good unit and would power 2 760's in SLI. If your freind isn't planning on SLI here's some other good options.

It's perfectly safe to even try because if it doesn't work; 1. It won't damage anything and 2. It will just not show the picture.

I have a GTX 760 and it's what happened to me, I even left the 8-Pin connector out of it the first time and also had problems with finding the right connector. But the PSU should have 2 6-Pin connectors, connect one into the card and the other into a 6 to 8-Pin adapter and then into your GPU.

Also the GPU should have came with a 6 to 8-Pin adapter so you can use that.

You shouldn't have any problems so go ahead and start the computer up :)

This is the PSU. Going to get him to create an account and provide you guys with the rest of the information you need like the picture of the PSU.

While that PSU shaped object might be enough to run the card(for a little while atleast) I would HIGHLY suggest against using it. It's extremely low quality which makes the chances of a system killing light show very high. This is the cheapest PSU that I would recommend running with that card http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-100w10500kr. The EVGA is a much better unit.

He's decided to just pony up and grab a new PSU.

I assume this one would work?
Also considering this one.

Solution

The chances of it causing a surge/short-circuit should be low.
