ok i bought the rampage extream and have been reading about ram. Very confusing. I want to know what would be best 8 sticks 64 gb at 1600 4 sticks at 32 gb 2400 or 8 sticks 32gb 2400? Or am I way off and should be considering something else? Please explain your answer. Thanks

1. How many memory slots does your motherboard have? That's the max number of sticks you can use. I haven't seen 8 slots in a non-server mobo in a long, long time.

2. What OS are you running? If it's a 32 bit OS it will never use more than 4Gb so use 2 sticks of 2Gb.

3. If the OS is 64 bit them look at the mobo specs to see how much RAM it will support.

I mistyped the mobo name earlier so didn't come up with anything. The Asus site says it only supports 8Gb so 2 sticks of 4Gb is your best bet if you have a 64 bit OS or 2 sticks of 2GB if you are using a 32 bit OS. That will be better than 1 stick of 8Gb or 1 stick of 4Gb because it will use dual channel mode, effectively doubling the transfer rate between the RAM and CPU.

In any case, look at the Asus Qualified Vendor List (QVL) before buying the RAM and make sure you get something they have qualified.

Most X79 mobos, (socket 2011) have 8 slots and are capable of 64GB, the X79 has been out a couple years now, in fact Intel recently released new CPUs for them....they are enthusiast PC mobos, not server

Yes you could but if you're using it for gaming it is overkill in the extreme. To give you a guidline I just opened Skyrim, Football Manager 14 (with 12 active leagues), steam, several youtube tabs in chrome, firefox and IE, and 2 browser games. I'm currently using 5.5GB

And, yes, it's a very good card but needs a full water loop

You could try, but be forewarned, mixing DRAM is not a good idea, even of the same exact model, it can be problematic, which is why the makers offers sets in all different sizes, all the sticks in a given package are tested to play together, which is why they guarantee by packaged sets, mix two sets and NO guarantee
