As soon as I download any big files my memory usage increases its almost as though it clogs up my memory when downloading onto pc.
anyone know why and how to fix this

Solution

YES. I fixed it last night after some testing. I have a Killer e2200 and I was using a qualcomm network manager thing with a bunch of extra services. I uninstalled it and installed the new drivers sans killer features. Tried the download again and memory stays nice an low now.

EDIT: The standard drivers (no features): http://www.killernetworking.com/support/driver-downloads/item/drivers-only

What Browser are you using, just out of curiousity?

I'm also curious to see what is going on in your process list. Sometimes, when a file is over a certain size, I notice my memory usage kick up too, but if I kill some process it will stop using so much of it.

Also, how much memory do you have?

I have 8GB and I use chrome but if I go into task manager and set in order of memory usage the one at the top isn't anywhere near the amount to cause me to hit 90+% usage like it does

And Chrome isn't at the top? That is very strange. The only thing I could think of that would cause it to do that is if you have an extension for chrome, I know that can kick up your memory usage.

Does this problem only occur when you download big files on Chrome, or whenever you download any big files?

It isn't at the top no on occasion it can be but it's not to do with chrome because i used steam to download games and it still happens also with origins and uplay when downloading. It still happens the only solutions I have for it so far is restarting every so often during downloads which is a real pain

Did you figure this out because I just put together my new build and am having same issue. 16G ram and after downloading from steam ram use goes up during (8GB highest so far) and after Idols at highest point. I removed all security, removed chrome, used cleaners. cant figure it out. ram is good.

Me too. Just built a new PC. Here's my specs.
MSI Z170A Gaming M7
Core i7 6700k
16gb DDR4-3000 Corsair Vengeance
Samsung 850 EVO 250gb
Windows 10
MSI GTX960 4G

Whenever I download through steam the memory usage climbs slowly but steadily. If the file is large enough the memory hits 99% and my brand new PC slows to a crawl. Never had this problem on the old system that was running the same steam version and the same nvidia driver. MemCheck ran and said the memory was fine. I used RamMap and it showed over a dozen nearly identical entries of " e:\steam library\steamapps\downloading\######\content###.vfs0 all taking up blocks of memory then not dumping them when they're usefulness is over. This is a serious memory leak and I'm out of ideas. Steam isn't being very helpful.

I noticed this also happens during torrent downloads so I'm assuming it happens for all downloads but I'm only noticing it on large ones. I've seen several posts around about problems with killer ethernet controllers like the e2200 or e2400 but i've yet to find a fix if that is the problem. (I have an e2400). I also tried teh regedit fix of changing the start value to four in the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Services/ndu" reg. I didn't see an improvement rather the same volume of memory held by the ram from the download now became an equally large amount in the non-paged pool upon restart. Only resetting the BIOS to defaults (even when no changes were made to BIOS) will then clear the non-paged pool so I can resume using my PC. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have the exact same problem! I just finished a download on steam of a 7GB game that took my RAM usage from 2GB to 5GB while doing NOTHING ELSE. The game has downloaded and installed, but the memory is still clogged up at 5GB.

EDIT: New PC too.

Do you also have a Killer e2200 or e2400 ethernet controller?

Good day,

I have this same problem but I'm not exactly sure what you did. Did you guys uninstall Killer? I have that running in the background.

Thanks in advance

Uninstall the Killer suite and use just the standard drivers found here.
