Hello everyone. I am new here and hope you can help me.

I have an HP laptop with ATA hard drive with the capability of adding another hard drive. I am running Vista 64bit OS. I want to transfer the complete OS with all programs to a SSH because my main program, Adobe Master Collection Suites, cannot install again.

I'm sure I would have to buy a ATA to SATA adapter for the SSH (or do I), but how can I transfer the entire OS on the existing HD to the SSD and can I save the existing hard drive for a backup if things go wrong with the SSD.

Thank you very much and I would sincerely appreciate any help in how I can do this.

If your laptop has the old type of drive interface (PATA, more commonly referred to as IDE) you need to buy an IDE SSD since on a laptop there is no room to fit a drive interface adapter.

You can then use cloning software to make an exact copy of the HDD on the SSD.

Free cloning software: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-free-and-reliable-cloning-tools/

After cloning, you must remove Windows from the original drive (the HDD) to stay legal.

Hi Phillip Corcoran,

I do believe that I do have the old IDE interface. I will provide a screenshot of my device manager to show you and maybe you can verify. If I can still use the SSD and not able to use the old hard drive as storage that is fine with me. So if I can do that you are saying that I need to buy an adapter for the SSD and then clone? The interface cables in my laptop are very small and so is the interface for my SSD, which is made for a laptop. So I can't see an adapter (if I need on) not fitting in the space if I am removing the old laptop hard drive. Does that make any sense?

My laptop hard drive is about the same size as my SSD.

Thank you for your feedback and looking forward to hearing from you again. Below is the screenshot.
